What's the Difference Between Simple and Complex Carbohydrates?
The answer is simple (pun intended). Simple carbohydrates are easier for your body to break down and digest. Therefore, it's not long after you eat that you're hungry again, and chances are you'll reach for a snack that's another simple carbohydrate, and the circle goes on and on. Simple carbohydrates are the ones that cause people to be overweight, and the sad fact is that they're everywhere. And it doesn't help that they taste good! Here's the "short" list of simple carbs:


 Sugary desserts and snacks
 Sugary beverages
 White bread
 Regular pasta
 White rice
 Sugary cereals and instant oatmeal


Most people think complex carbohydrates must be bad for whatever reason. This is simply not true. First of all, let's get to the short explanation of why complex carbohydrates are better for you. It's because it takes your body longer to break them down; therefore, you feel full longer, and you tend to eat less often. Plus, complex carbs are found in foods that are good for you anyway like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fortunately, a little fine-tuning of your diet can mean big changes for you on the carbohydrate intake front. To make these changes, start small. Try using whole wheat or whole grain bread for your toast or sandwiches, then try whole wheat pasta instead of regular. Finally, try brown or long grain rice instead of white. Chances are you won't be able to tell the difference in flavor.

To satisfy a sweet tooth, eat fruit (especially fruits like grapes). When you want chips or crackers, have carrots or celery instead. It sounds boring, right? Well, it doesn't have to be, and before you know it, you'll get to the point where sugary foods don't hold the appeal they once did for you. Then you'll notice that you're actually losing weight! No, it won't happen as fast as it would on a low carb diet, but that weight doesn't stay off as well as weight that's lost slowly. Remember, slow and steady wins the race!

Once you understand complex carbohydrates and good carbohydrates, constructing a diet with low carbohydrates should be a piece of cake.
