Low Carbs Diet
We've gone on and on about how a low carbs diet eliminates too many fruits and vegetables from your diet. But what about beans? If you don't know beans about beans and a low carbs diet, we'll try to clear some of the fog for you.
Eating Beans on a Low Carb Diet
One of the main problems with a low carb diet is that you don't get enough fiber, which leads to constipation, which can be uncomfortable at best and bad for your health at its worst. To avoid this, you should make sure you get enough fruits and vegetables in your diet. But if you're on a low carbs diet, you probably don't think you can have any. However, that's not entirely true. You can have a few fruits and vegetables. Remember--you get a certain amount of carbs each day. It's usually 20 grams a day during the first two weeks, and anywhere from 40-60 grams a day after that. What you include in your daily allotment is up to you. But for optimum health and nutrition, try to fit in as many fruits and vegetables as you can. But how do you know what you can have? To figure it out, you'll need your carb counter and a list of your favorite fruits and vegetables.
To remain regulated, beans are an excellent choice. Now, do we mean baked beans? No. Of course not. But why not green beans? Or better yet, green beans sauteed with pecans. Most beans have 3.5 grams of carbs for a 100 gram serving. Other good beans for people on a low carbs diet include:
- Snow peas
- Soy black beans (you can usually find these in health food stores)
- Edamame
Another excellent vegetable choice for those on a low carbs diet is asparagus. It has almost 2 grams of carbs for a 100 gram serving. Other veggie choices that have low carbs include:
- Canned butterbur - .38 grams
- Watecress - 1.29 grams
- Cabbage - 1.78 grams
- Mustard greens - 2.10 grams
- Cucumber - 1.18 grams
- Lettuce - 2.25-3 grams (on average)
- Broccoli raab - 2.85 grams
- Canned spinach - 2.92 grams
- Frozen turnips - 2.94 grams
- Summer squash - 2.96 grams
- Celery - 2.97 grams
- Tomatoes - 2.98 grams
All of these are based on a 100 gram serving. Some very strict low carbs diets might think these amounts are excessive, but have you ever heard of anyone actually gaining weight from these things? It's doubtful.
Whatever you do, keep your health in the forefront of your mind when it comes to low carb dieting.
